The West Dallas Chamber of Commerce held its First Annual Luncheon
Banquet at Goodwill Industries located at 3020 N. Westmoreland Road on
July 8, 2003. The banquet was the largest event held at the new Goodwill
facility with over 260 people attending. The banquet raised almost
$11,000 in funds for the Chamber and had The Coca Cola Bottling Company
of North Texas and Bank One as Title Sponsors. Other sponsors included:
GAF, Inc, Teris, Inc., Univision, Bank Texas, and The West Dallas
Community Church and Development. Each sponsor contributed at least $500 each.
The Chamber honored the following individuals and organizations in West
Dallas for their service to the community: The Crime Buster Award went to
Dallas Police Senior Corporal Donnie Chapman for his work with Chamber
members in crime prevention and for his work with the Police Department's
Youth Explorer's program. The Fort Worth Avenue Development Group was
awarded the Foresight Award for their vision of the Fort Worth Avenue
corridor, which includes a portion of West Dallas. City Councilwoman
Dr. Elba Garcia from District One was given the Good Neighbor Award
for her work in gathering funds from the City to help reconstruct the
roof of the Anita Martinez Center. GAF, Inc. was given the Member of
the Year Award for donating the materials for the Anita Martinez Center.
The cost of the roof has been estimated to be $161,000.
The featured speaker was Chancellor Lee Jackson from the University of
North Texas. Chancellor Jackson spoke about the changes going on in
West Dallas, the Trinity River Corridor, and about the importance of
educational opportunities in the area. He talked about the new University
of North Texas campus that is to be built at Camp Wisdom Road and Houston
School Road in South Dallas. It is the first University in the history
of Dallas to offer the opportunity of higher education in the City of
Dallas at a reasonable cost.
Other contributors to the successful event included a Mariachi Band,
the North Dallas High School Color Guard, Odom's Barbeque, La Estrella
Bakery, and Roses n'More Florist. Southwest Airlines provided four
$25.00 coupons for discounts on airfare for door prizes. The Reverend
Arrvel Wilson from the West Dallas Community Church led the Banquet's
invocation. John Cappello, Chairman and President of the West Dallas
Chamber of Commerce, served as Master of Ceremonies for the event.
