Meet the People Who Live and Work in West Dallas

West Dallas Vision

During a community workshop, participants described their long-term vision for West Dallas which is reflected in this Vision Statement:

West Dallas is a community of strong neighborhoods with family members—children, parents and grandparents—able to live near one another. Diverse businesses provide jobs for residents and opportunities for business ownership. Boulevards connect community activity centers where shops, restaurants, public facilities, churches and open spaces are available. Neighborhoods are beautified, safe and provide affordable housing opportunities within a healthy environment. Schools provide a positive atmosphere for learning, contain resources for constructive extracurricular activities, and provide direction and guidance for college studies and/or skill development. The Trinity River is a "living room" for the neighborhoods of West Dallas and gateways along the river invite people into the community.
Originally established in 1855 by French, Swiss and Belgian immigrants, West Dallas was annexed by the city of Dallas in 1952. Today the region is comprised largely of Hispanic and African American residents with a small percentage of white, American Indian, Asian and other ethnic and racial groups making up the balance of the population.

These diverse cultures bring a rich history and cultural diversity to the community. Because family members—grandparents, parents and children—all live near one another, there is a strong sense of the family unit and neighborhood pride.

Annual community celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo, Dieciseis de Septembre, Junteenth, Black History Month and Dia de la Raza bring a richness and greater cultural awareness to West Dallas residents as well as the greater Dallas area.

An industrial character emerged in the 1950's and is still a prominent feature of the West Dallas. Many residents take advantage of employment opportunities at these area businesses. Educational and vocational programs offer training to expand the skills for the local work force.

Single-family housing is the predominant type of housing in West Dallas, while multi-family and mobile homes make up a only small percentage of dwellings. New and affordable housing developments are underway to offer a greater choice in residential housing.
