Cultural and Historical Sites

Beginning with the first French, Swiss and Belgian immigrants in 1855 to the now largely Hispanic and African American population, West Dallas records and historical sites reveal a rich and diverse history.

Eagle Ford marker
Eagle Ford Community
Chalk Hill Rd. Marker commemorating early pioneers of the Eagle Ford Community, including the family of Enoch Horton (1777-1851). Land later used to house Mexican immigrant employees of the Portland Cement Co. (Texas Historical Marker)

La Reunion Cemetery (c. 1858)
Access from 3300 Fishtrap Rd. Located on road traveled by Reunion colonists to set willow fishtraps in the Trinity River. Burial grounds used by colony familles until 1940. (Texas Historic Marker)

Bilbo Jitney Line (1915)
2000 Sylvan Ave. Until 1927, Victor Bilbo operated motor vehides (not streetcars) to carry passengers for a nickel to West Dallas from the county courthouse. (Texas Historic Marker)

Western Heights Church of Christ (1872)
1912 N. Winnetka Ave. Founded after Brig. Gen. Gallo preached to settlers from DeSoto, Eagle Ford, Jimtown, Lisbon and Wheatland. (Texas Historic Marker)

Dallas/Irving Bridge
Dallas/Irving Bridge
This original bridge was the only link between this part of Dallas and Irving until Loop 12 was built. This bridge is famous because it was used by Bonny and Clyde in the early 1900's as an escape route from Dallas. A point of interest for the community, it belongs to history and is in danger of being destroyed and needs to be preserved.
